Gnome & Figurine Variations

I’m sure there are many more variations than are listed here. if you know of others, please contact me and i will add them to this list.

ABNER The 1st edition had an empty base. The 2nd had a flower pot. The 3rd had a basket base and Abner had a satchel attached to his belt over the right hip (rarest). The most common edition has a basket but no satchel.

ABRAHAM The lampbase is the rarer version. The thin base is common. Sea shells were added to later editions.

ADAM Double marked pieces of at least one run exist.

AHAB  WAS FIRST ISSUED WITH No coin, THEN A Swedish coin. THE Original had an oblong base. Some are double marked with the name on the base and on the bottom of his shoe (very rare).

ALOE “LIFEGUARD” imprinted on the back of his shirt is rarer.

Alphabet ‘S’  Early pieces the S was painted yellow, later it is painted red.

AMANDA Originally had a burlap hat with a point on the top. Later, the point on the hat was removed and an acorn placed on the hat.

ANDREW JACKSON The rarer version has no Mason penny.

ARNOLD In some versions Arnold has a fat face. In others a thin face and body.

ASSEMBLY TEAM October 1999 Release – In one edition, the words John Deere on the side of the tractor were indented and hand painted. On a later edition, the side of the tractor is smooth and a John Deere decal is used.

BABY JESUS There are two versions of the face, 3 or 4 of the hair.

BADGER His claws are black on rarer pieces.

BAKER Originally there was no support behind the feet (rarest). A recipe book was added for support. A vertical “BLUE RIBBON” on a scroll and a ribbon were next. There is a version with “BLUE RIBBON” on the scroll but no ribbon.  Small blue ribbon with no tails. very small unpainted ribbon with long unpainted tails. top tail turns under, bottom tail turns up. small ribbon with short tails. blue ribbon written on scroll in the middle. small ribbon with tails, nothing written on back. small ribbon, single tail, blue ribbon written on lower part of scroll, top tail turns out, bottom tail turns under.  In all, there are about 13 (a Baker’s dozen) variations mainly involving the scroll and ribbon.

BART A long stem on the acorn cap is the rarer version. Short or no stem is more common.

BESSIE An irregular-shaped base is the original and rarer. The round base came later.

BILL ELLIOTT The words “Anheuser Busch” are usually on the base. The rarer version has this omitted. One version has a brick base; another version is smooth.

BOOFEY Rare commissioned version of Harris.

BRIDGES “LLOYD” is imprinted on the left sleeve of the gnome on top of the bridge in some versions. It was omitted in others. And it may be misspelled “LLYOD” in still others.

BUBBA May have a Spanish coin or a Fun & Games token.

BUBBLES The yellow hat is rare. The red hat is common.

BUTTERCUP Very rare piece.

CAB Originally had a shield emblem (Quick Belt Route) on the back side of the statue next to the brakeman’s button (rare). The shield was later covered with leaves.

CAIRN CHRISTMAS 2000 January 2000 Release – In one edition, there are no leaves on the base of the artwork. In a later edition, a leaf has been added to the back of the statue.

CALEB Sometimes he has a coin in his pocket. Sometimes he doesn’t.

CALLIE Originally had an irregular base and her foot was showing. Her foot was later tucked under her skirt and she had a round base.

CANDY “HERS” on a piece of candy is rarer.

CAYCE The rare version has a key. The rarest version has acorns on the base but no key. The common version has no acorns or key.

CHALMERS With a hood is rarer. With a beard but without a mustache is rare. One version has an “O” mouth, eyes open, small coin and name in book. Another has the “O” mouth, eyes closed and a small coin. Another version has a 1955 farthing coin.

CHASE I The rarer version has toothpicks for ski poles. The more common version has little sticks for poles. In one version Chase has a mustache.

CHASE II Toothpicks for ski poles is rarer. Sticks for poles is more common. He may have a small hat or a larger hat. One version has a different head altogether.

CHEESE Rare has a dancing tiger coin.

CHIEF The B&0 insignia is on the rarer version.

CHIEF HOLLOW HORN BEAR The rarest version has an extended peace pipe bowl and stem. Rare is the extended bowl with shortened stem. A shorter stem and bowl is the most common.

COASTIE Originally had a yellow ribbon.

COLETTE The first version had a very thin base with a smooth underside (rarest). The base with a burlap texture and no leaves is rare. Most common is the version with the leaves on the underside of the base.

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER The rarer version has “LEE” on the wall. Piece may have name misspelled.

COTTON The original release was for Goldsmith’s Department Store. There was a penny under the right hand. The re-release is for The Cotton Gin and has a coin with the Seal of North Carolina instead of the penny. The original is rarer.

COUCH POTATOE No Cairn name or T/C logo.

COWBOY The rarest version has no straps at all. Some have straps on the chaps only, or on the hips only, or have both sets of straps.

CURTIS In some versions the trademark is on the “ART” book. In some it is on the “RELIGION” book.

BANBURY ON MORE COMMON BANBURY’S THE HORSE IS PAINTED RED AND BANBURY IS PAINTED WITH A DARK BLUE SHIRT, BROWN PANTS AND BROWN OR GREY HAT. BUT SOME HAVE BEEN FOUND WHERE THE HORSE IS NOT PAINTED AND BANBURY’S SHIRT, PANTS AND HAT ARE A LIGHT BLUE. OR THE SHIRT IS A LIGHT GREEN. 

BART A long stem on the acorn cap is the rarer version. Short or no stem is more common.

Benjamin  Tim added another book on later editions.

BESSIE An irregular-shaped base is the original and rarer. The round base came later.

BICK Some #1 editions have long white beard that touches the cube. May or may not have a coin.

BILL ELLIOTT The words “Anheuser Busch” are usually on the base. The rarer version has this omitted. The Brickyard edition was about 1100 pieces. Cairn stopped making Bill with the beer outfit in December 1994, and McDonalds began his sponsorship in 1995.

BOO Rare version has a large Dragon coin.

BOOFEY Rare commissioned version of Harris.

Bridges  LLoyd, misspelled LLyod on some versions, spelled correctly on the common version, and omitted on some versions.

BUBBA May have a Spanish coin or a Fun & Games token.

BUBBLES The yellow hat is rare. The red hat is common.

BUSH   Later editions had a peanut added to the base.

BUTTERCUP Very rare piece.

Buzzy   At least 25 stained pieces, various edition numbers, were accidentally released.

Cairn Christmas 1998  There are 4 versions: 1) No scarf, snail or artist names. 2) snail added. 3) red scarf added to the snowman. 4) both scarf and snail were added.

Cairn Christmas 1999  The colors were changed on Sonjs (the girl gnome) and the bonnet on Patty (snowwoman) were changed from blue to red.

Cap’n Charlie  A pencil thin mustache was added to later editions.

CaptAin Sunny & Old Baldy  On some very rare pieces, Captain Sunny was left off and a relief of the lighthouse keeper’s face was added. Another edition has a dated plaque over the lighthouse door.

CARL  Some pieces are spelled “Car.” On some pieces the “L” is barely visible or may have only a dash.

Carving Lady Jessica  A new set of blueprints was added.

CAYCE The rare version has a key. The rarest version has acorns on the base but no key. The common version has no acorns or key.

CHALMERS With a hood is rarer. With a beard but without a mustache is rare.

CHASE I The rarer version has toothpicks for ski poles. The more common version has little sticks for poles.

Chet  A black pick guard was added to the guitar and some editions have the initials S.R.V. on back of the guitar.

Court Jester  Created for and released to the Shriners mid year of 1998. Released to dealers January 1999.  Shriner piece has totally different paint finish (lavender & gold with red) and a different item number. The Shriner piece is very rare and demands a premium price.

COWBOY The rarest version has no straps at all. Some have straps on the chaps only, or on the hips only, or have both sets of straps.

Crown of Glory  The rock base was reversed. First edition was top heavy.

CURTIS In some versions the trademark is on the “ART” book. In some it is on the “RELIGION” book.

DAD WITH LOVE  One edition has Dad’s necktie covered with stars while in another edition, the tie is covered with moons.

Dailey  The original version only had several leaves and acorns on the base. Later editions were totally covered.

Daily  A smaller version of Dailey. Base was later given additionial leaves.

DAISY AND ERIC Originally, a very tall piece with no apron on Daisy (only a few made). The 2nd edition was shorter and Daisy had a triangular apron with lace trim and a daisy on it. The later versions had the square apron.

DANIEL BOONE The lampbase is the rarer version.

DEWEY The plain collar version is the rarer. The ruffled collar is more common.

D. G. Rare is the stained piece.

EDDIE Rare is the original version with Eddie’s fingers on his chin. His face is fuller and a lock of hair is visible on his forehead. The later version has his fingers on his mouth, no hair on his forehead, and his ears are larger.

ELIZABETH The rare version has no waist bow in back.

ERMA A long stem (1/4 inch) on her acorn hat is rarer. The common versions have a very short or no stem.

ERNIE The version with the little duck in Ernie’s arms facing left is the rare version. The duck usually faces Ernie’s right.

ETHAN Originally there was an irregular base with no cross or mushroom pulpit. the 2nd ed. had a circular base but no cross or pulpit. The 3rd ed. had a Celtic cross on his chest. The 4th ed. had the Celtic cross and a mushroom pulpit.

“F” (in GIFT) Painted red instead of green-

Fancy That  First editions had a coin which later was removed.

FETZER More common version has a thin face.

 

FIDDLER There should be a long neck on the violin. A short neck means the neck has been broken and refinished.

FIRECRACKERS  On a later edition of this statue, a scalloped seashell has been added to the base.

first smile On later editions, both parents wear wedding rings.

FLYBOY Originally had a yellow ribbon.

FOREST GNOME First base was irregular and the piece was tall with no foliage, nuts, or coin (rarest). Later, wrinkles were added to the coat. Acorns, twigs, leaves and a coin were added to the base. One version had a Kennedy half-dollar. Each version got 1/8in. shorter. One version has “Unibeick” BV on the logo and has a Queen Elizabeth coin. This version is 1-1 1/2″ taller and is fatter.

FRANK January 1999 Release – One edition depicts the frog holding a cigar in his mouth. Another edition has no cigar and a bowtie has been added for a special occasion.

FREDDY He may have a turtle/no coin, a square coin, a marlin, angelfish, or seahorse coin, a Florin coin or a dolphin coin.

FROSTY A rare version is double-marked. One run was for 750 pieces.

GATOR Has had three different coins.

GEORGE SHINGTON STOREN Some don’t is usually printed on the piece. Hair is usually brown (unpainted). Some versions have white hair-One version has MASON on the piece.

george washington “Westmoreland” is usualy printed on the piece. On some pieces ti is misspelled. Some versions have white hair. One version has “Mason” on the piece.

gerber Some editions have a coin; some do not. On some versions there is a leaf under his foot. rare version is almost double in size.

G.I. Originally had a yellow ribbon. RED, WHITE & BLUE ARE COMMON.

GIOVANNI Version with the stacked coins is rarer.

Gimmie A Kiss  Tim Wolfe Charmers: On the rare piece, The kiss is gold, the common piece, silver.

GNBA Arena  On the frontside of the most rare pieces, the leaves are folded together in a upwards position approximately 1/2 inch and the center court is smooth. On the second version, the front leaves are flat and folded over the front of the base and the center court has a raised rectangular shape. A third version (most common) has GNBA on the rectangle. All three versions have appeared in #1 editions. (Note: it is possible that the second B-version may have been sanded too much and is not really a casted variation).

GORDY May be double-marked. One run was for 500 pieces GREYBEARD One version has Greybeard spelled “GRAYBEARD” and has “ANDY” and “SUSAN” imprinted on the rock.

Gore  A dime was added to his pocket.

GREYBEARD One version has Greybeard spelled “GRAYBEARD” and has “ANDY” and “SUSAN” imprinted on the rock.

GrizZ  Later editions were poured using a black pecan-shell mix.

Hal  Very early editions does not have the black paint in the eyes and mouth.

hamlet There are two different bases.

HAP The hat style changed at least three times. Originally, the piece was brown with an irregular base. The hat had a leaf-brim. There was a mushroom behind the tree stump and there was no coin. The later piece was painted, had a round base with an Irish coin, walnut shells instead of a mushroom, and the hat had a narrower brim with a garland of small leaves at the brim-crown junction. The purple jacket is very rare.

HARRIS Early version has a brown crab and a rust coat. Common is a green crab and orange coat. Has a rare commissioned version called “BOOFEY”

Harry  (Lee Sievers) A prototype piece that later became ACE, the first production piece by Lee Sievers. Only three pieces of Harry exist. Lee and Joe Poteat each own one. Lee presented the third for the July 1998 Charitable auction at the 3rd annual SC Gnome Gathering. High bid for the piece was $850.00 in the form of a sealed bid by a Las Vegas, NV collector.

HATTIE One version has her wearing pearl stud earrings. This is probably the later version. In earlier she has no earrings or just a tiny painted dot for an earring. She was also larger in early versions.

HENSON In one version the frog has a full crown. Another version has the frog with a smaller, open crown. He wears different hats.

HERB The rare piece has no coin. There is usually a coin present.

HOBO Santa Fe emblem is on the rarer version. The common version has a Free Parking token.

HOMEMAKER A rare piece (may have been called SCHOOL DAYS) with a woman, a little boy, and a cat. Less than 20 made.

HOWDY The purple coat is rare. The maroon coat is very rare. A yellow coat is more common.

HUGH ROBERT The 1st edition was larger and the golf ball was cast in place on the piece. Later versions were smaller, the golf ball was cast separately and glued in place and there are two tees on the base.

HYKE The common version has Hyke with his hand at the top of the walking stick. A rare version has 5/8 inch of the stick extending above his hand. A very rare version has the stick extending 1 1/2 inches above the hand. And the rarest version has the long stick extension and a little bumble bee on the stick.

IAN There have been various tartans on the air bag. A few pieces were released with no paint on the bag. These are the rarest pieces. The bag was probably flat originally and became full in later versions. Some are more inflated than others.

igor The number 1 edition has a raised number 1. Has the numeral 5 on coin; another has the numeral 10.

INDY Originally INDY was in a red car with windshield wipers. He had a lock of hair on his forehead. RED INDY is the rarest. He was switched to a blue Indy-type car. He may be in a grey Indy car. The Lifesaver steering wheel may be red or green. The coin is more commonly on the left of the driver but is sometimes seen on the driver’s right.

IRVIN Originally, there was a shotgun shell on the base but no snail. Later, a snail was placed by his right foot. One version has a 12 ga shell with a small coin; another has a 20 ga shell with a 1955 Farthing Coin.

It’s Your Move  The checkers were progressed and both players were “Kinged” on later editions.

Itzhak One edition has this violin playing frog in a tuxedo jacket and bowtie while another edition depicts him without the jacket and tie.

IVY The predominant color for her dress is orange. One version is stained, no paint. One version the hands and face is red and a dark putty colored dress. Most bases are plain or smooth with Ivy sitting on a folded leaf and other large leaves covering the base. There is a version with a coin and the base is covered with acorns, cones, stems..the multisided coin is at the rear of the base.

JACK OF DIAMONDS The beardless version is rarer.

JACKSON The rarer version has no bow-tie.

JANE The rarer early version has seeds around the base.

JASON He usually has bird prints on the bottom of both feet. A rare version only has a track on one foot.

Jean Pierre  Very rare piece has silver flute and no coat.

JEFF There are versions with no coins. Three different coins have been used on other versions.

JEREMIAH Rarest is the red heart. Rare is the pink heart. One version has a cream heart.

JEREMIAH SALLIE “JEREMIAH” is misspelled “JERIMIAH” – rarer.

JIM Original version had seeds around the base.

Jingle  First released pieces, the bell was painted silver. The story mentions a gold bell and later pieces the bell was painted gold.

Jodi  Early hatbands sometimes were painted yellow.

John Robert  An additionial face was sculpted on left side of his beard.

Johnny  A feather was added to Johnny’s hat.

JOSEPH I Rarer version has a 1/2 inch long candle. The candle became shorter in later editions.

JUDGE SNEPP Rarer version has CONSTITUTION misspelled “CONSTITION”.

KATIE Rarest version has a pencil holder. The rare version has an attached cauldron. The unattached cauldron is more common.

KERNEL The Indian head penny is rarer.

KILMER The earliest editions had a single German coin depicting the planting of a tree. Later editions had a 1928 penny stacked on top of the first coin. He had a long stick above his hand in an early version.

LAWRENCE Early editions have no coin.

LEATHERNECK Originally had a yellow ribbon.

LENNON One version has a reddish jacket.

LIEF The rarest version has an acorn on the large leaf. The rare version has nothing on the leaf. LIEF is misspelled as “LEIF” on some. There may be a rose on the piece or there may not.

Lil’ Clarence (Cairn Bronze)  A leaf was added to the back of the base.

LIL’ SANTA The early rarer version has reindeer hoof prints on the bottoms of Santa’s boots.

little ben On later editions a second tee was added.

Long Winter’s Nap  (Tim Wolfe)  Less than 15 Pieces have been found with a pedEstal base and a gold plaque. Only found in edition  #1 and #2. VERY RARE.

LUCKY He has had various faces. Versions with and without coin. The rarest (and first) version has a 4-leaf clover on the hat.

lucky II Different versions have either light green or dark green clover.

Lucky Lucy  On the original piece, her skin was painted green, very rare. The common piece is skin tone.

Lug  A #1 edition has been found with no name, very rare.

LUM Earliest version had a space between the deer antler and the base. This is the rarest. Later, the space was closed but it reappeared even later. Lum was fatter in the early versions. One version has no pouch and no coin.

MACDONALD The rarer version has “EIO” on the license plate. Later, “EIEIO” was printed on the license plate on the tractor.

MARION Usually has names imprinted on the logs. Rarer editions have no names on the logs. MARION may be misspelled.

MARTIN For a few editions there was a coin. Usually there is none. Rarest version has the coin behind the right knee.

MARY The rare original piece saw Mary’s face lined. Later editions had a softer-looking face.

MATTIE Originally there was no cameo and no waist bow on Mattie. These are the rarer versions. The cameo and bow came later. Some quilts have blue lines and some have red.

mcdonald The rare version has “EIO” on license plate.

MCMAN The rarest, and first, edition had McMan holding a little branch or twig in his raised right hand. Later, a hole was drilled in the hand in which the collector was to insert a toothpick. He later had a school bell in that hand and even later, held a jingle bell. His left hand has held a strawberry, an acorn, or nothing.

MCNEIL He may or may not have a coin. The rarer version has a full beard. There was an unnamed piece similar to MoNeil that sat on an edge. Only about a dozen were made and it is very rare.

M.D. The original version was named “Cy T. Scope” and had a red catheter tube under his arm and the initials “SES-Aua on the base. The second edition had the name changed to “M.D.” Later, the red tube was removed but “SES-AUA” remained. Newer editions cover “SES-AUA” with a leaf. In 1996, 200 pieces were produced with “NES-AUA” for the Northeast Urological Society fall meeting. This piece has a Buffalo nickel representing Buffalo, NY where the meeting was held. Edition nr 7 is the highest number. 

MEG There is usually no coin. A rare version may have a coin. Meg was fatter in older editions. One version has Meg’s chin touching her collar and has a coin. Another has her chin up, plain sash across her back and no coin. One version with round face, bow only in back, shoes barely show below skirt, no coin. Yet another version has a round mud face, dots for a sash, shoes barely show below skirt, no coin.

MERRILL AND LYNCH There was no teddy bear nor was there a coin on the original version. These were added later.

Melchior II The top of the box was changed from blue to gold to indicate the contents.

Merry Christmas (QVC)  Peppermint stick was removed, and a bell as well as the words “Twas the Night Before Christmas” were added.

MICHAEL Michael may be misspelled on some pieces.

MISS MARY The rarer version has a frog under the desk. The comic book version may have a comic book that says “SPIDERMAN” on it or it may say “COMICS”. Some versions have white cuffs on her sleeves.

MODE The common version has no coin.  There may be a French coin on some rare pieces. But the rarest has an Irish greyhound coin. On some versions he has a pouch or little knapsack. On others he does not have one. 

MOM The original and very rare versions had no apron and the piece may or may not have a hollow base. There is normally a coin on the base, but some pieces are without the coin.

MONTY The car was originally a blue Indy car (BLUE MONTY). The later versions changed to the red car with windshield wipers. MONTY and INDY traded cars.

MOORE OR LES The original coin said “FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY”. It was replaced with an Israeli telephone token. The grey phone was early. The phone has been beige, green, and maybe even red.

MOSES The ridged base and long stylus (1/3 to 1/2 inch) is the rarer edition. There may be 1, 2, or 3 ridges on the very bottom of the base (where it sits on a table). Newer versions have a smooth base.

Mr. Fisher  On early editions, the fish was a bass, later editions, the fish was changed to a trout.

MRS. CLAUS II The version with a green dress is rarer. The red dress is later and more common.

MULLIGAN The tee may be white on a few pieces.

NAOMI Originally there was one acorn on the base and the dress was plain. The 2nd edition HAD floral decorations added to the dress and many acorns were placed on the base.

NATH In some very early editions the beard is painted snow white.

NEMO There was no hood on the original piece. The coin may be Irish with a dolphin on it, or a British penny depicting a sailing ship.

NEY Ney standing on two books and has a black hood is rarer.

NIP AND TUCK AND SANTA In the rarer version Tuck’s head is tilted downwards. More commonly it is tilted backwards.

noel  The rare version has a soccer ball.

NORTON molded in 1980 A Y-shaped walking stick is present in the rarer version. In addition to the Y walking stick, he started off with a “Lum” beard and his knapsack had acorns on the back. In the next edition, Norton does not have a full beard. One version has an open smiling mouth and a Lincoln penny. Molded in 1982 has a straight walking stick and the coin is on the right hand side beside the foot. He does not have a full beard but you can see more of an expression on his face. The edition # is marked on the front of the base. The base is mounded (taller & thicker) which provides a sturdy base & a heavier piece. The backpack is smooth (no acorns or extra pocket.

NUNNY Nunny has a beard in the rarer version. Usually he does not.

OAKIE The first edition had Oakie’s big toes on the wrong side of each foot (feet were on the wrong legs) and he had a beard and mustache and a Brazil nut at his foot. His hands and feet were tinted red on one rare version. He later got a new body and a new face without a mustache. There is a beetle on the base but a few pieces may have omitted the beetle.

OBIE The cork bobber has been various colors. Version without a mustache is rarer.

OJ The rarer version has a green jacket.

OLIN  He may have a red hat and/or a blue coat. Another rare version has him wearing a lime-green coat and a light orange hat.

OLIVE YOU In later editions, a heart was added to the center of the Greek coin.

OLLIE ONE RUN OF 750 PIECES were double-marked.

OSCAR  BLUE STARS ARE RARE.

PALMER The rarer version has an orange coat.

PAPA AND PRINCESS The rarer version has the legs supported by a walnut only, no leaf. The common version has a walnut and a leaf.

PAR “TITLEIST” may be printed on the golf ball or front leaf. The common version does not have “TITLEIST”

Passing Fancy  A counch shell was added to the left foot.

PATCH There may be a German coin OR May be other coins.

PATRICK  A few pieces are misspelled “Patrich.” He may or may not have a coin. The first edition had a different face from later editions. Some pieces have clover on the back of t h e hat; others do not. Another rare version involves the positioning of his feet. Unlike the picture on page 20 of Volume I the feet are spread apart by about one inch. They are not confined by leaves on the base. Instead, they extend to and form part of the edge of the base.

Pawley  On later versions, the turret of the castle is further up the leg. This is known as a full castle.

PC & Manual  The initials DOS was added to the mouse’s book.

PEANUT A rare version does not have a leaf supporting the legs in the back. The common version has a large leaf for support.

PEARL  ON RARE PIECES, HER NAME IS SPELLED ‘EARL’.

PENN Originally there was a space between the birds tail and the base of the statue. Later versions saw the space closed.

Phillip  a leaf was added to the gas can.

PIANO There are at least two variations of sheet music. One version has “Allegreto” printed on it. Another does not.

Playtime  There is a four leaf clover backside of the cat. A very few pieces were released with no clover.

PRISCILLA The yellow dress is the rarest. The grey dress is common. There may be some pieces with a sweater collar.

P.S. The rarer version has two insignias (front and back), Boston Elevated and United San Francisco.

PULLMAN One version has the Chessie logo. The version with insignias front and back has the Union Pacific and the Northern Pacific.

PYRATE The rarer version has a Skipper-like base. The shape of the pearls spilling from the treasure chest varies.

REMEMBER  In an early edition, the gnome’s beard is shorter. On a later edition, his beard is longer — he’s getting older, you know.

REUBEN There have been various coins. The version with a crayfish is rare. One version has the eyes turned to the right.

RISER I The common version has a leaf covering the side of the head with no ear visible. A rare edition has the right ear visible.

Robin  Early editions had only one sleeve cuffed.

ROSEMARY The absence of a waist bow is rarer.

RUMPKIN  RARE IS A piece with no markingS.

RUSHMORE Presence of a souvenier coin, is the preferred version.

Salty  Some pieces,the coin is heads,some pieces tails. When tails, the item number is missing.

SAMMY The rarer version has pock-marked leaves.

SANTA  THE EARLIER VERSION HAS A DARKER STAIN. THE LARGE LEAF IS MISSING BY THE RIGHT SHOE, THE COIN AND A SMALL ACORN IS MISSING FROM THE SACK, A YELLOW FLOWER IS MISSING FROM BELOW THE POINSETTIA, AN ACORN IS MISSING TO THE LEFT OF THE RIGHT FOOT, THE DOLL HAS A GREEN BLOUSE AND RED SKIRT, SANTA’S HAIR IS WHITE UNDER THE BACK OF HIS CAP AND THE DOLL’S HAIR IS ‘MESSY’. IN THE LATER VERSIONS THE DOLL HAS STRAIGHT HAIR, A RED BLOUSE AND GREEN SKIRT, A LARGE LEAF WHERE THE EDITION NUMBER IS STAMPED, A COIN AND SMALL ACORN IN THE SACK, HIS HAIR BENEATH THE BACK OF HIS CAP IS BROWN AND SANTA’S FACE IS NOT STAINED.

SANTA I The original, and rarer, version has a coin in Santa’s bag. The Raggedy Ann doll has had a red dress with green top, green dress with red top, and later had a turquoise hoola skirt., A piece with the name “SANTA” missing has been reported.

SANTA II There was a space between Santa’s left boot and the hobby “horse in early editions. There were also no bows on the packages. The bows were added to the presents between Santa’s right leg and his bag later. The space between his left boot and the hobby horse was filled in with leaves and nuts and more presents were added. (Was there something about a curl?)

SANTA’S HOME  In later editions, the words “can be recycled” have been added to his bag of gifts.

SAY CHEESE  Some #1 editions have the camera painted solid black, rather than black and white as shown in the Cairn Studio magazine.

SCANDI The rarer version has a tail. It may have a red bow on it. The rarest version has a tail without a bow. No tail is common.

Scarlet  “B” was added to her bonnet.

SCHOOL DAYS  Rare – Forerunner to Traditions. Very hard to find.

SCRABBLE Supposedly, one day the word “scrabble” will be removed.

SEAN The rarer version has a stem on the apple. More commonly the stem is absent.

SECRET May or may not have a coin. Some pieces have petals on the flower.

SEW IN LOVE January 2000 Release – One edition depicts the dress covering her feet. Another edition shows her feet coming out from underneath the dress.

SHAW He may have an English threepence, a NY subway token, or a magic coin. He may also have a mustache and a large coin with MAGIC.

SHELBY On later editions, two sea shells were added to his satchel.

SHELLY (shelley) He may have a coin in his pocket or the coin may be absent. the early version is smaller and has a coin under his arm. Some gnomes are spelled ‘shelly’ and some ‘shelley’.

SHHH  Color of bells were changed from silver to gold.

SILAS An acorn cork in jug, can opener and coin behind him. Or, no cork in jug and no can opener or coin behind him.

 

Showtime Yellow hat was changed to traditional gnome red.

SIMEON He originally had a thin face and a twisted hat. Later, he had a fatter face and a less twisted hat. His hat may be red orange. May have a hollow base.

Ski Bunny  Bird tracks were added on the base in later editions.

SKIPPER The rarer version has two coins stacked on top of one another. He usually has only one coin.

SLEUTH Variations have various titles on the books. The piece was finished on Tom Clark’s birthday and several editions have clues as to the time of year and how old he was on that day. Other editions have references to tobacco.

SLIM Originally there were sunflower seeds around the base.

SMILEY ONE RUN OF 750 WERE Double-marked AND is rarer.

SMOKY The rarer version has a 1/2″ stem on the acorn hat.

Snappy  There are 3 versions: no hat or glasses; with glasses; with a ball cap.

SOL The coin may be Israeli showing a palm tree. Early versions have no coin.

SPOCK The rarer version has no leaves around the base.

STARR Originally there were small twigs in Starr’s hands for drumsticks. Later they were replaced with toothpicks. Still later grooves were etched in his hands so the collector could put in their own toothpicks.

ST. FRANCIS The original, rare version had one dove on the BASE. The rarest version is the 2nd edition with no birds on it. Two birds are on the more common version.

ST. NICK On very rare pieces NOEL is in raised letters on a ribbon on the front of the base. There may or may not be a coin on the right side of the base.

STOKES The version with two insignias has the Southern Pacific and the Great Northern.

STUCK Version with no bow tie is rarer (may only be first edition). Pieces may be double-marked. One run was for 750 pieces.

SUGAR AND SPICE The version with the wedding invitation is rarer. Usually no invitation is present.

SUNNY He may or may not have a coin. On some versions he has a much taller hat.

SWABBIE Original versions of all Salute to the Services had yellow ribbons. The common version has red, white, and blue ribbon.

TELLY Telly came with the old video “The World of Tom Clark”.  It is more valuable with the video and more so if the video is unopened.

TEX The rare version has a penny present.

THE 7 UP There are only two number ls in existence.

THE BRIDGES  “LLOYD” is imprinted on the left sleeve of the gnome on top of the bridge in some versions. It was omitted in others. And it may be misspelled “LLYOD” in still others.

THE Sentry later editions were poured using a black pecan-shell mix.

THREE TO GET READY  The rarer one has red/white/blue colors and another has green, orange, blue, yellow & red.

Tiger  A new towel was added to the golf bag.

Timber  Some pieces have black streak on back of head. We only know of this variation in #1 edition pieces. However, there is at least one #1 which does not have the black streak, making it “one of a kind”. Note: To our knowledge, this is the first Tim Wolfe piece with a major variation.

TOAD I The rare version has a cookie on it. Raised black stripes on brown pants is rare.

TOAD II The rarer version has a cookie on it. Also rare is the red and white striped shirt.

TOOTH FAIRY  A #1 edition, had a red toothbrush, cream toothpaste, peach dress, flowers on hair very bright colored, and all coins, leaves, acorns totally rearranged.

TOPSIE AND TURVIE Has beard and coin has 2 dolphins on it; No beard and coin has 2 dolphins; Has beard and a coin with a large numerical 2 on it, stacked on top of the dolphin coin.

TURTLE In the original versions the face on the ballplayer resembled a turtle. On later versions the features have been softened to more resemble a man.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS There are many variations on the colors of the packages surrounding the tree.

UNCLE SAM Usually there is a quarter on the base. Rare pieces do not have the quarter. The trousers on the rarer version have narrow red stripes and wider white stripes. More commonly, the red and white stripes are the same width.

UNCLE WHIT Some pieces do not have a jackknife on the base. Some do.

VAL The rarer version has Val in a grey coat, maroon hat. More common is a blue coat.

VANDER  On one edition, the sign on Vander’s birdhouse reads “for rent” and another edition shows a “sold” sign.

WAKE-UP CALL One edition will have a blue bird whispering in the fawn’s ear while yet another edition displays a reddish bird and a different sculptural eye style on the fawn.

WE’RE HEAR FOR YOU On the rarer, original round base the bunny is farther from the child and there are two coins on the base. On the rarest version the base is kidney-shaped, the bunny is closer to the child, but there are NO coins. The common piece has a kidney-shaped base, two coins, and the child and bunny closer together.

WILBUR Rare pieces have Wilbur misspelled “WILBER”

Will  A coin was added for Will’s Bookstore 80th anniversary.

WILLIE AND SON Willie may have a cowell-neck shirt or a plain one.

WINK The rarest version has vineS climbing the candlestick. Later versions have no vine. A rare edition also has both of Wink’s ears visible. Later, only the right ear was visible. In early versions he had a mustache and his face was flatter.

winkin, blinking and nod  in one version There are fewer leaves on one side of the shoe, the coin is different, and the coin is under a leaf. In another version there are more leaves anD the coin is on top of a leaf.

Wise and Wonderful  Later editions has a leaf tucked around the coin.

WISHBONE  Two versions, each version has its own story.  the original, rare version has the gnome facing forward and holding a coin. The common version, the gnome is looking into the well, is not holding a coin and has acorns for buttons on his jacket. The original version has a more stout gnome next to the well. On some editions, the gnome is taller and thinner and has a rope belt.  

WIZARD The first edition had a plain, leaf-shaped base. The 2nd edition had a circular base. Later versions had acorns, more leaves, a toad and a mushroom. The Wizard also got fatter.

Woody  Woodys golf club lost its head on later editions.

You’re Purrfect  The green dress later was changed to red.
